Phil's Fishing Tip of the Month |
As we mentioned on the opening page, it is almost always impossible to weigh trophy sized fish so there are a number of formulas to get a very accurate weight from the specific measurements of the various species. Although the calculated weights are ineligible for IGFA records, they are amazingly close to the scale version. |
The girth (measurement around) is taken at the greatest part in inches. The length of the body is taken from the tip of the lower jaw to the middle of the crotch of the tail (inside the vee) in inches. The girth of the fish is squared and then multiplied by the length and this total is divided by 800. Voila, there you have it! |

An example would be: Fattest part of the fish is 50" Length of fish from tip of lower jaw to the inside v of tail is 100" 50 times 50 equals 2,500 2,500 times 100 equals 250,000 250,000 divided by 800 equals 312.5 and this is the weight of the fish in pounds |
